Aloha Grass Shack Cafe Aikanes (Friends),
Here we go again! Once more, we are having to shut down the Grass Shack for a short spell. We're in a legal battle for my family's ancestral land, and need time to prepare for the final phase. Therefore, we will be closed until Saturday, October 20th - when we will reopen with our usual hours.
We may have to do this again in December, but we hope not.
If you are curious as to what we're doing, then we can chat about this when we return. I believe citizens should learn more about it.
We want to thank you all so very much from the bottom of our hearts for your generous patience and understanding in our time of crises. Unfortunately, we have no staff to carry on during our absence.

The Folks at the Grass Shack Cafe
Hidden in plain sight, right off I-5 in the quiet shopping center at exit 24 in Phoenix, Oregon, you can find the Grass Shack Cafe
dishing up the most authentic Hawaiian food in the Rogue Valley. Their menu boasts traditional Pacific-Asian fare, which has origins
rooted in Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Filipino cuisine. Paul and Lani McMahon opened the restaurant about a year and a half ago,
and along with Tito Tausaga Hermosillo, who works as sous chef, the trio brings Lani’s mother’s recipes all the way from the island of Kauai to your plate.
On the menu you’ll find plenty of island specialties like Loco Moco (beef burger patties on a rice, topped with eggs cooked to order, and smothered in brown gravy), Chicken Long Rice (Hawaii’s take on chicken noodle soup, with glass noodles and onion in a ginger broth), and traditional island-style burgers and sandwiches like the Kalua Pork or Chicken Breast with Ono (a soy-based sauce made with ginger and garlic) or Teriyaki sauce. The dessert menu is full of island treats too, like Haupia (coconut pudding squares), Kulolo (a mixture of taro root, brown sugar, and coconut baked in banana leaves), and a number of amazing, scrumptious cheesecakes like Lilikoi (passionfruit), and Guava.
Among these striking specialties, the “Plate Lunch” holds its spot as king on the menu. Plate Lunch, which traditionally is served with a meat such as Kalua Pork, Teryaki, or Ono chicken, a couple scoops of white rice, and a nice helping of macaroni salad, is a dish that echoes a time when the Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Korean, and Portuguese plantation workers of the late 19th century would bring their lunches to work and share with each other. What we have now is a delicious fusion of all these ethnic dishes, with a little American influence, the Macaroni Salad, added to it to make up one of the most pleasing Hawaiian comfort food plates there is.
All the sauces at the Grass Shack Cafe are gluten free, and there are plenty of vegetarian options as well. They brew some of their own delicious drinks as well, like the Pineapple and Lilikoi (passionfruit) iced teas. Beer and wine are also available.
Come say aloha during happy hour every day from 3-6 pm when some of the menu items are just $5! And be to sure visit every Saturday from 6-9 pm to enjoy some live music on the outdoor patio, Luau style!
